The news hit like a hurricane. When Wiz Kid jetted in the country for the Guinness All Black Party, what ensued was a collabo between him and Mowzey Radio and Weasel. Admittedly, everyone was on his toes, hanging on to their bloomers. They couldn’t wait. The noise was near deafening. The internets choked with selfies of the trio hanging together. We waited. Uganda waited. Nigeria, too, must have waited. All, impatiently. And when it arrived, what do we see? A total bore!
Hang on, it is not a bad song. Don’t quote me. It is an alright song. But to me, it doesn’t kick me. I mean, I have listened to the darned song. Countless times. I have paused everything and listened to it. But I haven’t found traction. I haven’t gotten that point of connection. I haven’t arrived to the point we have been all waiting for, you get? You don’t. Here is the thing, the song was swallowed in the noise. All I hear, even in the song, is noise. Disorganized noises. Was it rushed? Maybe it was.
International collaborations with local musicians haven’t gone down in good books. I mean, look around. What is a major hit between the local artistes and international artistes? All have slithered down the drain, faded off like mist off the door. And your Don’t Cry, sadly, followed the same path. They panicked to do the song. The production is flawless, yes, but the vocals and lyrics, to me, are wanting.
It is a whole nonsensical drivel our artistes tend to sell to us that they have finally arrived after doing a song with an international act. They manipulated us. They robbed us of a good song and the abilities it had. If there is any artiste panicking to do a collabo with, say, Jay Z, don’t rush it because he has to be on a plane back home in the morning. Don’t. If you can’t wait, then chill. We, the listeners, deserve better. Don’t we? We cried.
Listen to the song here.
