Admittedly, Juliana has fallen off the shelf a few months ago. I struggle to remember when she last had a popular song. ‘Woman’ tried to salvage her dwindling career, but the songstress seemed to drift off into a comfort zone shortly after. We understand; the mourning and all. But her single Kalibatanya might, at last, breathe life back to her ailing career.
The video, as sections of people would say, is a far cry of her former self, but it is not bad either. Though, the whole standing behind the golden microphone with two shirtless dancers behind dancing unevenly is a bit cliché; it has been overdone. It reminded me of Kanyimbe. Her facial expressions was emotive enough to bring the song alive. I hate cliché storylines love songs tend to carry themselves with, but with Kalibatanya, I will do an exception. The storyline was predictable, yes, but we shall stifle a blind glare and let it pass. The video shows two love birds flirtatiously texting each other on phone. The lady in the living room, smiling like a kid in a candy store. The man, on the other side, in a wardrobe, changing clothes and all. They were bound to meet somewhere and have a tipple. It was that plainly predictable. The camera angles weren’t the best; the director or whoever was behind the camera should have done better.
These lads tend to morph the background and paint it, say, white with the artiste glittering in a pool of white. It is not creative, if you ask me. And they tended to carry the same idea with this. Well, it struggled to impress because Juliana was good on the eye. The woman is beautiful. You even forget that the idea was dull, as if crafted by a senior four dropout. And the whole putting a giant J in the background was uncalled for. We know Juliana. We know how to spell her name. She doesn’t need to introduce herself. But she takes credit for the most part of the video; her smiling. Yes, that smile. Women like her should smile a lot. And she didn’t disappoint. It is an average video. But if she has to salvage her career, maybe, she should start with this video.
