John Legend’s friendship with Kanye West may be strained by the rapper’s recent behavior.
Legend criticized West on France’s Clique TV on Wednesday for meeting with President-elect Donald Trump, saying, “I think Kanye was a publicity stunt.”
“I’m pretty disappointed with Kanye that he says he would have voted for Trump,” Legend, 37, followed up. “I think Trump has been corrosive — his message has been corrosive to the country. And I think the things he’s promised to do have been very concerning for a lot of people and for Kanye to support that message has been very disappointing.”
West, 39, claims to have met with Trump to discuss “multicultural issues” including the ongoing gun violence in his hometown of Chicago. “I feel it is important to have a direct line of communication with our future president if we truly want change,” West tweeted after the meeting.
Legend and West’s friendship goes back more than 12 years. West played an instrumental role in helping Legend launch his career in 2004, producing Legend’s debut album “Get Lifted.” Since then, they’ve grown closer, attending each other’s weddings and occasionally double dating with their wives.
But in recent weeks, Legend has been vocal about his friend’s mental health.
West spent more than a week in a Los Angeles hospital after experiencing a “temporary psychosis.” Before West went under doctors’ care, Legend said he was “concerned” by what he saw, wishing the “Coldest Winter” rapper would get “rest and some time to figure things out.”
