Brazilian free kick maestro Juninho Pernambucano has ended a glittering 20-year career by retiring from soccer.

“We spoke during the week and he has decided to retire,” Vasco da Gama president Roberto Dinamite told reporters on Thursday.

Juninho, who celebrated his 39th birthday on Thursday, played 393 times for Vasco in three different spells.

He won league championships in 1997 and 2000, a Copa Libertadores in 1998 and a Copa Mercosul in 2000. He scored 76 goals for the Rio club.

Juninho also had a hugely successful career in France with Olympique Lyon, winning the Ligue 1 title seven years in a row between 2002-08.

He also represented Brazil at the 2006 World Cup and helped them lift the Confederations Cup the year before.

Juninho was best known for his incredible free kicks and could hit the ball with pace and accuracy from any angle or distance.

Residents of Kampala and surrounding areas were treated to an exciting weekend when central region-based teams competed in the Airtel Rising Stars regional tournament held at Ssendi playground in Kabowa.

The games that took place on Saturday and Sunday saw KJT boys team defeat Spartans 1 – nil and Uganda Martyrs girls beat Gadaffi 1 – nil to emerge victors and receive trophies, certificates, balls, kits and a cash prize of UGX 1,000,000 each.

Speaking at the end of the regional games, Airtel Uganda’s Head Brand & Communications Ms. Remmie Kisakye said the ARS platform, over the past five seasons, has been a medium of talent discovery for young stars, some of whom have gone on to play for different clubs in Uganda as well as the national team.

“Since its introduction back in 2011, Airtel Rising Stars has played a major role in the nurturing of remarkable talent. We are proud to see that the Airtel Rising Stars initiative has established itself as a strong feeder program for the national team,” she added.

FUFA delegate and Guest of Honor Mr. Chris Kalibala applauded Airtel Uganda for establishing and sustaining this program that has benefitted Ugandan youth across the country.

“We are lucky to have companies like Airtel Uganda that spend time and financial resources on developing the Ugandan youth not only through employment but also through passion points like football,” he noted, adding that football is a uniting factor for Ugandans across the country and gives the players income to better themselves and their communities.

The Airtel Rising Stars program started in 2001 with an aim of developing grassroots football by encouraging and nurturing the youths’ football skills and providing them with the opportunity to evolve and acquire new football techniques that will turn them into distinguished soccer talents.

Over the weekend, talented boys and girls were selected by FUFA scouts to represent the central region in the national finals that will be played in Fort Portal in August this year.

Nile Special has unveiled a special football to celebrate Uganda. The ball, which is 3.5 metres in diameter and stands on a 2.25 high pedestal, was revealed at the brand’s World Cup final fun-park at the KCCA grounds on Sunday.

Speaking during the event, the Nile Special Brand Manager Francis Nyende said that, “this ball is representative of who we are, what constitutes our country, and what unites us all. It is meant to inspire and ignite our passion in the Cranes all the time.”

“We want to celebrate all the things that make our country special while also reminding us to keep faith that we have what it takes to be among the greats at football’s most prestigious event. To us at Nile Special, the end of Russia 2018 World Cup is only the beginning of our journey to the next World Cup.” He added.

Aptly named football “Made of Uganda”, the art installation predominantly consists of local material and Ugandan inspired artwork themes. It is composed of various themed panels with each representing either an aspect about Uganda such as traditional music instruments, landscape sceneries, cultural apparel, and staple foods among others.
