The Uganda ladies’ national netball team, the She Cranes, has qualified for the Netball world cup for the first time since 1979 after a spectacular display at the ongoing qualifiers in Botswana’s capital, Gaborone. The week long campaign has seen the She Cranes triumph despite financial restraints.
The She Cranes opened up their qualifying campaign with a game against Zambia who they unsparingly beat by 53-48 in the first game on Monday at the Africa Netball World Cup Qualifiers in Botswana.
The She Cranes then battled it out with Zimbabwe in a very tight and close game but managed to overcome them with a one point margin when they won the tie by 43-42 on Tuesday. The financially stricken ladies without a sponsor or training ground dispatched hosts of Botswana before thrashing King Mswati III’s ladies by 51-38 score (Uganda 51 – Swaziland 38), a win that confirmed their qualification to the World Cup due August next year in Sydney, Australia.
They play Namibia today in their fifth and final game of the campaign. Their qualification now implies that they have joined South Africa and Malawi who already qualified to represent Africa in Next year’s World Cup.
